Closing down the blog....
I am going to consolidate blogs and merge my articles with my "Dice of Legends" blog as I have not been doing much 40k or Fantasy of late. I could launch into a long story as to why but just simply, my heart isn't into the game like it was, time for a break again. This happened after I left GW and I was inspired to play again a few years later. Right now the rules are not to my liking and perhaps things will change with Fantasy for 9th and if GW can get 40k under control. Who knows!
I invite you if you are not a follower to join my main blog:
http://diceoflegends.blogspot.com/
I will be doing an update there and cleaning up a few things to make everything fresh and of course my current articles here will be loaded there before I clear this blog.

First game of 7th (or 6.5, whatever they are calling it)
Lee wanted to get a game in with the new rules after having a few days to read over it. Being I had taken leave of the game for about a year I decided to dip into the waters to see how the changes are.
We met at Learn to Play Games in Tampa as they was open on Memorial Day and Anthem was not. The owner was really cool and the store was clean and well laid out. Clearly more of a card and board game store they also really want to bring in more mini gaming to the store.
Lee had the typical IG and tested out a few odd and end things...2 Wyrvens, several Chimeras, some veteran squads and a regular platoon, Inquisitor, Commander, some Priests and Commissars. A ton of shooting in essence....against my small horde of Word Bearers that had a Dark Apostale, Sorcerer, 4 Squads of 10 Marines (1 with 2 flamers, 1 with 2 meltas, 2 with 2 plasma guns), 2 Havok Squads (4x Heavy Bolters and Missile Launchers x2 and Autocannons x2 in the other), 2 small squads of cultists and a Vindicator....we opted for 1500 to keep the game small as we was learning the changes to the rules.
We opted to try one of the Maelstrom Games, which are the more advanced missions, we got the one where you can score off your opponents cards as well as yours. In these missions the objective cards can really swing a game it seems. We placed 6 objectives, I won table side, Lee got first deploy/turn. I failed to seize on the first turn. At first our dice was wiffing but the large number of shooting from all the Chimeras, squads and weapon types plus Wyrven Bombardments started to take a heavy toll. I tried to stick to the game to rack up victory points and managed to earn first blood....many of the scoring cards came up on my end and I was able to stall Lee enough to rack up a decent total before my army crumbled in the end. We rolled for another turn and got it, this really helped Lee fill the gap...
The result: 10 VPs (me) and 7 VPs (Lee). I got first blood and a lucky 3 on a d3 on a card with a bunch of other 1 point cards. Lee got my Warlord, Enemy Lines and 5 from objectives. The Word Bearers was blasted to atoms and was to me a hollow win. It did prove the cards creates a random element in the game and does make things slightly less predictable.
Thoughts:
Psychic Powers: Interesting changes, overall I think I like it....I do see a heavy psychic army pulling a ton of dice into a pool and stomping someone in the psychic phase. Being in its own phase is nice to see again.
Like the Circle of 3-4-5 of vehicles going from weak to tough to weak to slightly tougher in 6th....I killed TWO Chimeras the entire game and it was a pain in the ass. AP1 and AP2 weapons are IMO gold now if you REALLY want to destroy a vehicle. Vehicles are back, they are no longer plastic coffins...
We really didn't do much hand to hand as I was foot slogging and he mostly sat back and shot with Chimeras advancing squads safely. Shooting is a bit more brutal with model removal and the resolving X set of weapons first also seemed to be a nice return.
What would have helped me was to have a Demon Prince and used the new Psychic powers to summon squads of demons to rampage on the field, fluffy for Word Bearers anyway. Also, Rhinos...or rather transports in general, a MUST in any army. Drop the cultists and take a few would have helped.
After thoughts, they fixed a few issues and opened a can of worms in many other aspects. To me the scales just reversed now. I had to say this but really their new stuff like the Wyrvens was DIRT cheap and UGLY in the game....yea, GW wasn't marketing these bitches to sell like other new kits right? Right! I do see several abuses that can spawn up quickly and I am unsure how this will impact the competitive gaming. To me keeping it simple and playing with friends is what I will do....and watch the local tournaments. Personally, the Unbound option just screams ABUSE ME! Like other famous lists you see on the net that are very popular to use by power games that just have more money than sense. Yea, I have a 9 Vendetta lawnmower list....pat yourself on the ass and call you Susan because you are that special. You broke the game and exploited the rules. Feel good? Want a medal? Making the game not fun for others a good thing? Nope. Oh well, it is going to happen....I just plan to avoid the stupidity. Yea, I am now a beard and proud of it.
In many ways I am slightly disappointed by how GW handled this edition, the editing is rushed as I think the rules testing was also. They are clearly mining for cash and don't give a rats ass about a game really as long as they are sucking in the cash. They had a great game and concept and slowly been sucking the good from it and also pricing themselves to the point it is just stupid. Great you have a quality product but you don't have to charge designer drug prices for it.
Shots of the game...

A good marketing idea?
GW just sent this email out showing off the 5 new paint sets they are selling. They of course have a golden demon painting a demon. Still, was this a good idea to draw in the younger crowd? While I have no issues with magic and demons, when I did work for GW there was several parents that only let their kids play 40k and not Fantasy due to magic....some parents saw demons and marched right out of the store....
Think this a silly thing? Perhaps, but it can dampen some recruiting prospects of new blood into the hobby. I know lots of people that never watched Harry Potter because of magic, Star Wars because of the mysticism in it, etc....I know many will say that then perhaps this isn't for them.
I do recall one of the guys at the store I worked at did a great demo with younger gent and then was walking about the store showing all the armies he could collect and play with the boy's mother in tow. Then he picked up a box of damonettes (the old metal nude ones) and pointed out that we even had demons he could play. Let's just say this didn't go over well for the boy's mother and they left....

RIP White Dwarf! Welcome Mini-Dwarf!
So, now White Dwarf is going to Mini-Dwarf magazine! It
appears that the price is $4 a book for 32 pages. Now it sounds like they have
acknowledged they are going to move away from the Sears and Roebuck style of
making their magazine a glorified catalog and actually make it a hobby magazine
again! Wow! What a concept!
Problem is the game SUCKS ASS! Yea, let’s throw in Forge
World, Super Heavies and extra Fortifications to make up the sales and totally
push the game from any concept of competitive gaming to ROCK>BIG
ROCK>BIGGER ROCK! Wow, Magic the Gathering for Minis, do you kiddies have
your credit cards yet? Better get a larger limit!
Great idea, but a few years late there White Dwarf, guess
you see the writing on the wall and trying to find a new way to rake in some
extra cash? How so? $4 a pop equals $208 per year, even discounted they would
make more than their typical subscription rate of 12 issues for the prize of 10
(or 8 if you are willing to go to a GW store to pick it up)....yea the one’s that
are closed at weird hours, has limited hours and run by a lackluster black shirt
that is worked like a slave and is conditioned to be a used car salesman when
you walk in.
I pray that if there is an 7th that it may bring
some hope back to the game, but I doubt it. As long as they keep letting these
knuckle-dragging-idiots push the game along in this direction, right into the
pit of despair and hell itself! Oh well, good news there are plenty of other
games out there and we can always go back and play “Classic Hammer” back when
editions was worth a shit.
Wish in one hand, poo in the other....which one fills faster?

40k in review for the year
Well, my last Codex that I purchased has been the Dark
Angels and before that Chaos. I bought a few models with the Shroud Speeder
being my last purchase of GW items so far in 2013. My last two events was a
tournament in June and playing at the Kalm in Alabama in May. I had a blast at the Kalm
despite some setbacks and it was good to see my family. With Bolt Action taking
up most of my time and looking for a new job 40k hasn’t gotten much attention.
This year, the Kalm is out for me due to starting a new job
and low leave balance (that I need to save for my 10 year anniversary!) but I
do plan to do some fun games. I am unsure if I will go to tournaments anytime
soon as I just frankly hate the meta right now and until that settles down I
don’t want to go play a cheese fest. I’ve always wanted a good solid game and
not a game of big, bigger, even bigger!
Thoughts:
Adding Forge World was the shadow of doom to the game,
including it as “official” is crap. FW is big boy toys with people with lots of
money to piss away, granted with the price hikes of late the entire game is
going in that direction.
Already brought up the price hikes…wow steeper and steeper
every year.
Finecast gone….good! It sucked ass.
Adding Escalation rules for more defenses and super heavies?
Really? Super Heavy vehicles are just stupid to add to the mainstream. This is
a push to sell crap that isn’t selling.
I am looking forward to the Ork Codex and future IG
releases, that may revive my faith in 40k. I have read the Inquisition book and
think it would be great to play with for some laughs in game.
Overall, I am going to sell some of my stuff. Things I won’t
use anytime soon or have used in the past two years. I need to reduce the
clutter and make space. In the past it was reasonable to collect this and that…now,
it is just THIS and only this within limits. I do plan to have fun with 40k but
on my own terms and not GW’s anymore.
I do plan to finish up various armies that have been long
neglected and back into the painting circle as well.
My armies as they stand:
Tau (going to be sold)
Orks (waiting on the book)
IG (waiting on the book)
Space Wolves (staying for now)
Dark Angels (staying for now)
Inquisition (staying for now)
Chaos (Keeping Iron Warriors, Word Bearers, 1000 Sons &
Death Guard. Khorne gone)
Demons (Keeping for now, for Word Bearers, etc)
Fantasy Vampire Counts (keep)
Fantasy Chaos (get rid of, the small bit left)
Am I giving up on 40k? No, but I am going to a more casual
play for this year while I wait to see what happens when the dust settles. For
now, I want to play some of the new Kill Team games and just general fun games
for now. I have been lax with articles and I hope to perhaps revive that with
painting, reviews and some flashback articles also.
Happy New Year!

Wow, so true about the 40k Meta
This is from Bell of Lost Souls and is so true...

I've been quiet of late with 40k since the Kalm and my last tournament in June (I think) at Darkside. With my old job being phased out I had to find a new one (and did) so the job shift, a death in the family and the holidays has really thrown a wrench into regular gaming.
Mostly Bolt Action has attracted my gaming time as the 40k meta is going in a direction I just flatly don't like. Which the BOLS cartoon sums it up, 40k is turning into Magic. You have to spend money on the latest things and expensive items to get the game winning results, first they opened up rules holes that created deathstar combos and now they are slipping Forge World in and now they are trying to slap more super heavies and defensive kits into the game all for the all mighty dollar. While I respect they are a company and their job is to make money, it is at the expense of the quality of the product that makes us want to be a consumer for it.
Then the rumors are flying at first saying there is a 7th on the way, which is a lie as not enough time has passed but there is discussions of online updates aka 6.1 rules to keep the changes "soft" and not cause sticker shock to the players. Wow, what a load....if they do small updates and sell them cheaper, say $30, do three of these, they make the same if not more than they do on a new book and not even releasing a new rules set. Low work and high profits! All electronic also! Everyone is saying "wow what a concept"! NOT! GW did this I think it was back in 4th, where you had to have a stack of White Dwarf mags to keep p with the meta of the changing rules. It was in print instead, but it is the same concept. It made things very complicated and hard to keep up with which is what caused them to move to 5th and then 6th which became a train wreck because they didn't think ahead on their changes.
Oh well, to me it is like watching Nascar and you see the wreck about to happen and you can't do a damm thing about it but watch.
Maybe with the Ork book on the rise I may slip back into gaming casual and try a local tournament or two to see what the waters are like again.

I have seen the mythical unicorn of 40k!
By this I mean, the gamer that can afford the overpriced Forge World Prices, namely in this case the star ship corridors for ship fighting! I joked with the guy and asked if he won the lottery and he just laughed and said no he was military deployed overseas so he had a ton of pay just building up in an account and nowhere to spend it.....must be nice!
It was an amazing work by the company. Sad that he only just had it primered black instead of painted up looking all awesome yet.
Still the game looked fun and I may drag some stuff with me next week if the guy shows and play with them in between doing demos.

GW and the state of gaming for me.
When I started to play Games Workshop games back in the
early 90’s I loved it. The background was cool, the miniatures were great and
the rules were fantastic. There was a variety of games offered by the company
including Epic, Gorkamorka, Morhdiem, Necromunda, Warhammer Fantasy and
Warhammer 40k to name a few. What was great was playing great games with a
group of guys at the shop, eating pizza, laughing and having a great time
playing great games.
The golden age has passed I think and GW is in a decline.
When I went to work for them in early 2000, I read the “little red book” and
understood what it meant to work for the company and meeting great people
during that time that are no longer in the company. I could see the attitude
changing even then from that of a game company to a corporate money hoar that
cares very little for their customers, just the bottom line. While it is fine
to be a business, you have to keep customers to stay in business, of late I
have watched price increases (including marking up product in the stores I
worked for) and the hikes have been steeper and more frequent than ever. Kits
are just getting silly in prices, sure the model is of good quality, but is it
reasonable in price? No, simply put they are going with a business model of
hiking the prices, making less product but still making higher profits at the
moment as the price increase overtakes the loss of sales. Anyone with any
knowledge of how the economy works calls this a “short gain” it will work only for
a short period of time before it will collapse as a business model. This will
be the end of GW, I feel that it is on the horizon and they are hitting that
crest as we speak. They can make or break the company, if it breaks we may have
no more than 5-10 years before it becomes a little fish in a large and growing
pond of games out there.
GW has also had a serious bad attitude with their Legal
Department, they are happy to slap out cease orders on everything and have
become virtual Nazi’s when it comes to showing teaser items and new releases.
They instead are trying to promote their magazine or rather their game catalog
to be their preview medium as they simply can’t for the life of them figure out
why White Dwarf sales are done. Here’s a hint GW, the content sucks go back to
the old school days of adding stories, content and good game reports for
example and you will sell more copies again! Speaking of Legal, they go after
companies that make products they don’t, claiming IP violation….maybe this is
the case, maybe not. In any case they feel they own more than they actually do
in the IP world and feel entitled to milking the tit for every drop they can.
Still, the Chapterhouse lawsuit and given them the finger and has drawn the
line in the sand that if someone stands up to them, they may be in the wrong.
The quality of the game has also gone downhill. In an effort
to boost the game, they went with “bigger is better” in their models and codex
design. Every army in Fantasy and 40k are getting bigger beasties and vehicles.
Of course with a nice price as well! Oh yea, you want 2-3 don’t you….cha-ching
$$$$!
Flyers have totally broken the game for 40k more than
anything, sure there are other units that have popped up in books that have
made people shake their head and go what? Of course there are those that are
going “cool” as long as it benefits them, but when you are getting screwed over
by those same hyper powerful units, it isn’t no longer “cool”. Players
following netlist trends are copying more and more lists that people find that
are broken and work, allowing them an easier win. This part is what really
bothers me but is just an evil fact of the information era today. People have
stopped thinking when it comes to army lists; they would rather “research” and
then copy/buy that list for an easy winning formula instead of bothering to
figure it out for themselves. We have moved into an era of wargaming where
people don’t think as much as they used to. We no longer are challenged with
making a “good” army list but rather a “winning” army list, or aka WAAC- WIN AT
ALL COSTS.
Even the player base is starting to change as has the
attitude of gamers. People are placing more and more focus on competitive
gaming than just having fun. They again focus on these power lists and winning
more than just having a good time and being social. Which his one of the
largest reasons I enjoy tournaments, 3 games against 3 different opponents is
how I see it as an outing with my friend(s) to throw some dice and have fun.
Yet, it is hard to enjoy a game when the person you are player is a huge power
gamer and has a hyper competitive list. You watch it chew your army apart and
you think “wow this is about as fun as watching paint dry”. There always are those one or two players at
an event and I or my friend (or both of us) tends to draw those types of people
and then just have a miserable game.
I have not played Warhammer Fantasy since 6th
edition, I have tried a few games of 7th and 8th, didn’t
like it. They watered down the Psychology
that made my Vampire Counts totally useless and only specific builds are viable
if you want to be able to play it seems from my reading. The magic is another aspect;
I just don’t like the current breakdown of how it plays. Plus they keep
plugging all these “large kits” and other crap that makes me shake my head and
clearly see GW wants you to buy the latest and greatest big thing. Maybe the
next edition will be a savior. I am holding my breath. Already I have sold all
my Fantasy armies except my Vampire Counts as frankly, I have not played them
much in years and I don’t enjoy the game. I keep the VC for nostalgia and hopes
that a better edition will rise from the grave.
Next, GW has killed both their Historicals and Fanatic divisions…guess
there wasn’t profit in those areas. Or rather, they would have to work harder
to make money there….which is sad, the Historicals had a great line of books
including Legends of the Old West and Legends of the High Seas, both great
games, similar to their Fanatic skirmish games and a blast….really? You just
had to update a book and print it. Not like there was a huge investment there
boys and girls and there was a fan base, a fan base you have sent to another
company now. They thank you GW. The worst loss was all the support to Blood
Bowl, Necromunda, Morhdiem and other great Fanatic games. To be honest, when I
started to play, THIS was what I really enjoyed. The story, the flavor and the
fun of gaming with these titles. GW could have done so much to revive this line
with minimal investment and could have turned profit by taking advantage of the
crappy economy. Develop up some Necromunda multi part plastic kits…sell both
for 40k and Necromunda, cha-ching! Who would not have killed for a multi-part
Blood Bowl team? Yea, pose your own team in plastics?
The only saving grace is a rumor this year that in October
that an Inquisitor Skirmish game is going to roll out that targets 2-4 players
with 10 or so models for each player with a new product line of minis and
scaled to heroic level instead of the 40mm old scale. This appeals to me as I
loved the Inquisition concept, loved all the books and feel this could be a
saving grace if they did a good job with the rules. One can only hope and wait.
I have decided to
keep my Chaos, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Imperial Guard (small) and Orks in my
collection. The Tau are about to go up for sale and my Necrons have already
been sold about 6 months ago. I just cleared out the last little bit of my
Sister’s of Battle
metal figures also. I am tired to trying to keep up with everything, I am going
to consolidate my collection and play with what I got.
I will keep playing and trying to enjoy what joy is still left in this game and I will be back to adding more content to the blog as well with discussing things about the new Space Marine Codex.! Until then GW, you have been warned and oh yea....
I just love these images that I found on the internet!

Memorial Day: We will not forget.

To all that have served, I thank you for your service.
To all those that have died to protect our freedom, I thank you.
We as Americans are not perfect, but we try to uphold what is right.
We may not often get things right but that is an element of freedom...choice.
Be proud of those that served our country and give them the honor they deserve.
To fight takes courage, to fight with conviction takes character.

Is GW doing the right thing?
Well, you may have heard a few things that GW has been up to that makes me stop and wonder what the hell they are thinking.
First, they are dropping the Specialist lines, several items are showing as "no longer available" on their site and the indicator is that they are all going away. So, what happens when they pull the pdfs? How will Blood Bowl continue without the living rules published? The IP Nazis would make them take it down it would seem. The same for the other games? Bad idea getting rid of the line? Well, I know it isn't a huge money maker but keeping the historical records of the PDFs and having the minis to purchase isn't a bad thing. Money is money and nothing up front has to be done plus does it really take up that much space? Not really IMO. They could do steps to reduce yet still support. Sad to see an era of good gaming going to hell.
Second, Blogs are getting hit now that are posting up stuff GW has not released yet...yea, they are protecting their IP and want to sell their White Dwarf mags, but let me say this nobody in the gaming industry has such a martial method of holding lordship over their IP and information. Plus, they pulled their Facebook, wow, don't like bad publicity GW? Other companies have embraced it and are using it as a positive tool to promote their stuff. I think GW is adding more holes to their ship and taking on more water. How long until the company sinks? 10 years? 15 years? Maybe less?
I love the game but with all the price hikes and dickish attitudes to their fans it makes me wonder if this is a company I want to continue to support with my hobby money. What do you think?

The frantic before the Kalm!
Sorry for the lack of posts of late. I have been rather busy
with a variety of things and I still don’t feel like I have recovered totally
from all the medical ordeals that my mom went through. I think the mental part
of healing over a major series of traumatic events can take its toll and can
eat at you. So, it takes time to regenerate those lost parts of your mind and
soul.
What is going on? Well lots, I have about a week left for my
preparation rituals for the Kalm in Huntsville
Alabama on the weekend of May 4th!
I still have to reserve the van and confirm our hotel reservations I made to
ensure everything is in order. Plus to my tradition I adjusted my list again
early this week and working on a few final items to my army including a Land
Raider Crusader, a Ravenwing biker and a Darkshroud Speeder.
Last night I spent most of the night putting the speeder
together and tossing some green Army Painter spray on the Land Raider to speed
up the painting for that monster. I feel pretty good about the painting goals
of having all three done by next week. Sure, no transfers may be done but at
least it will be painted and ready for the table.
I have also been teaching one of my friend’s Blood Bowl.
Chris ordered a croc team but it has yet to show up after 6 weeks and the
company has yet to return an email to him. It was lucky he had a Chaos team in
a box he bought long ago and just painted them up quickly to have something to
play. After two test games I helped him come up with what I feel is a good team
mix that he should enjoy. Simple and brutal was my goal, but well that is my
concept also.
Our itinerary is really stacking up and it looks like we
will have a busy time out:
Thursday: pick up rental van, assemble the crew and hit the
road! Stop after about a 7-8 hour drive to my parents to spend the night and
visit them. This will be the first time I have seen my mother in about 5 months
as the last time I left her she was in the hospital still after I sat vigil for
her from the tumor removal from her brain until she was stable and recovering
for well over a week.
Friday: Load up early and make the Huntsville
in about 2 or so hours, making the Huntsville
Space Center
when it opens. Then off to the hotel to check in and play Blood Bowl that night
with beer and pizza.
Saturday: The big event! Head off to Knuckleheads (a bar
that hosts the tournament) and start playing and drinking beer. I had a blast
last year, this year should be even better! After we finish and awards are done
we are going to watch Iron Man 3 that night!
Sunday: Up early and hit the road stopping in Dothan Alabama
at a BBQ spot I found that has been in the family for a 100+ years (not the
building, just the business!). Chris and I spotted it on the way home last time
(sadly we ate at Wendy’s an hour before) and when I did stop on my way up for
my mom’s surgery I treated myself to a good BBQ meal. Very tasty stuff!
Monday: Recovery day! Return the van early.
So far my 1.1 million Blood Bowl Orc team is like this:
4 Black Orcs - 2 with
Block, 2 with Wrestle
4 Blitzers – 2 with Dodge, 1 with kick, 1 with sure hands
3 Linemen
2 Rerolls
1 Fan Factor
It is tough, skilled and decent all around. I look forward
to some Blood Bowl on Friday!
My pending 40k list is something like this:
Sammuel (in speeder)
Land Raider Crusader
Command Squad (with the Salvo 2/4 banner)
6 Full bikes with 2 plasma guns and an attack bike with a
multi melta.
3 units of 3 bikes with 2 plasma guns and an attack bike as
above.
1 Darkshroud Speeder
1 Blood Angel Librarian (with spear and sword powers) with
jump pack.
2 Squads of Blood Angels with jump packs, 2 melta guns each.
3 vehicles and 45 marines loaded with plenty of plasma,
melta and bolter hell with cover saves, scout and deep strike options to help

Container Store Raid!
My wife and I stopped at the container store today and I grabbed up a few choice items to test out as possible storage products. In all, the three cost me $12 and some change and I am happy with the quality (plus they are MADE IN THE USA). I admit it is getting harder to find products within our own country and frustrating at times.
The loot!
The shoe one costing less than $2 holds 4 Rhinos (could put one more in) in various methods including 2x2 facing or like this with two long and two flipped the other way.
The next size up, holds a flyer nicely, just add padding. Just $4!
The next one (a sweater box) holds 4 of the standard GW trays, the first one goes in with a slight bow but when all 4 are in, you can add a foam topper on top and everything is snug and secure! Not bad for $6.
Side shot to see how everything packs in nicely.
9 New GW Paints!
9 New Paints join the Citadel line, are they worthwhile or crap? Of late the new paint line seems to be hit or miss. I plan give them a try, they are apparently for extreme highlights and appear to be very bright. Figure khaki, Blue Horror, Flayed One Flesh, Gauss Blasters Green and Dorn Yellow will be my test choices. Lilac is interesting but not sure how useful. Same for Orange, Pink and the Aqua blue color one.
What are your thoughts?

The Death of the Gaming Store
I found this video to be very good and well detailed on many of the bad policies that GW has put out.
Sad that another retailer is gone but they also lost a brick and mortar store. Great job GW!

Competitive vs. Hyper-Competitive Gaming Styles
To me this image captures a WACC Hyper-competitive player to the letter.
This again is another sore subject with some people but it does bear honest thought on the topic. All of my games were Competitive and two was what I consider Hyper-Competitive. What is the difference?
Competitive: A balanced and good list, built on the ideal of fair play and a challenge for both the player and the opponent to use. The list does not carry the player (as a crutch to win) but rather relies on the player being a good general and the luck of the dice.
Hyper-Competitive: This is a clear case of min/max design, death star units, using Forge World that is there to give you a clear advantage, modeling to advantage and trick pony lists as I call them (where you take X, Y and Z to do this result, a good example here would be taking the Doom from the Nids list and giving them the psychic power that mimics his own ability so you can “double doom” an opponent. Legal in the rules but exploitive) to name a few. These lists are clearly heavy handed and intended to be very Win At All Costs (WAAC as it is called) and takes very little skill to use. A good example would be this: Two guys are to dig a large hole. One has a shovel and the other has a backhoe digging machine. The guy with the shovel will take longer, will have a workout and have a sense of accomplishment when finished for doing a hard day’s job. The other guy with the backhoe will spend a ton of money to achieve his goal quickly and will have little care about the accomplishment of the task as there was no challenge to the activity other than the fact he is already done and inside the house drinking a beer and watching TV.
Out of my 6 singles games, 4 armies were highly competitive and gave me a strong challenge and forced me to think. None of these lists was lightweights either: Space Wolves/Grey Knights, 2 Tyranids (with large bug lists, Doom, heavy psychic, etc) and a damm good well build Slaanesh Chaos list that was stunning to look at as well as very well balanced and thought out with zero Forge World in any of the four armies. There was some doubling in the list which is fine, redundancy is ok but cut and paste armies is just again a sign of min/maxing. Every one of these generals offered a strong sense of game play and was a joy to play. I won only one of these with a full score of 20 against the Chaos player, the next was 14 solid points against the Space Wolf/Grey Knights player, the last two was slight margins (one win and one loss) with 9 to 11 (9 being my score) and 7 to 2 (7 being my score). These games tell me we were level and were a solid game.
One of my worst games was against the Eldar player that took first place, looking at his scores he pretty much with a record of three scores of 20 (max points), one score of 2 with the remaining two a 11 and 18. This list had a mix of Dark Eldar and Eldar with the Baron with a unit of Wraith Guard to give a cover bonus with Eldrad in tow. Throw in 3 War Walkers with multi-shot guns with a psychic power for rerolls made them pretty damm effective. Slip in a Warp Hunter Forge World vehicle with a large high AP blast and a Hellhound style torrent shot as well. Sprinkle in some cheap scoring units with some Fire Warriors with the Exarch manning a defense gun at an Aegis line. The mission was tough against me as it was Hammer and Anvil and my dice did play against me but I was just steamrolled by the rerolls, twin linked and high AP and all the other tricks this list had packed in it. After a point it wasn’t even a game, it was a slaughter. To me a win isn’t enjoyable if the other guy didn’t have a good time also and I steamroll them with little effort.
The other game was pretty much the same, again with two Forge World stalkers, two large units of Wraiths with a Lord in Destroyer body with 4 squads of 5 Warriors with transports that fly. This was a simple list, tie up the opponent with the monstrous creatures that was modeled flat (so they could get cover, bad form also IMO, what part of monstrous creature was missed?), and then use the Wraiths to finish off your opponent with the Lords giving Preferred Enemy. Drop Warriors late in the game to grab objectives. Again the dice was against me but even good tactics can’t hold out against a steamroller designed army. Again, I found this not very fun to play against as this was a clear min/max list with FW and tricks to carry it again. This army again had a nice 20-18-18-4-2 record. I know that the 2 was from the Eldar player I spoke about above, at that point those two lists was two bricks thrown against one another for the final round.
Again, please note I am talking about the player’s list, not the player of either of the above lists. Both were great guys and we didn’t have any real issues in the game. This is strictly an analysis of the games and the composition of the armies I faced. I am old school for tournaments with balance and comp are things to me that are important for a solid and balanced list, neither of these would have passed under the old system and feel this is a failing weakness of competitive gaming allowing anything goes for lists as it encourages these crutch lists.
Nobody likes to get hit in the nuts. Keep it above the belt and fair play to all!

Forge World at Gaming Events: My thoughts.
Well, I figure I would touch on the first set of thoughts about
the event I was just at. A majority of the armies did not have Forge World but
the few that did had powerful units mixed among the armies that started to
raise a few concerns about this trend. If I recall, I think the average was
about 25% of the player base had Forge World of some type and number in their
list.
I know this is a sensitive subject and many people argue it should
be allowed at both GT and local events as it “balances the game” and “adds to
the game”. This is the point I have to agree to disagree, it adds more
units that can be abused now legally by allowing Forge World and it does not
balance the game at all. If it was intended to be in the core game, it would
have been written into the core rules and the army books, not published as
special books by a sister company. Yea, I know they have released the “40k ok”
markings saying they are legal for 40k and have since pulled the wording prior
from their old FW books where it said “you should have your opponents
permission before using”. Can you say GW money grab? Thought you could, GW is
out to grab every dollar they can, by changing the brand that way, they can now
suck more cash out of your wallet at the cost of the quality of the brand of
their game and the rules. Do they care? No. Spend your money on that stuff, yes
they do. Many others would agree that Forge World does not belong in mainstream gaming such as events like this or event at local RTTs.
One person in a discussion said that it should be allowed so Eldar
and Tau can have flyers to deal with other flyers. The Eldar/Dark Eldar player
I went against didn’t use any Forge World to balance that at all neither did
the Tau player I saw. Instead he took the Warp Hunter tank, at 135 points, that
thing is a steal is all I can say. Large AP pie plate and High AP Torrent
template plus a skimmer with all the trimmings of rules to add to that like
jink and then tossed in an Aegis line with a defense gun like everyone else.
Everything I saw in armies was Decimators, Warp Hunters, Vulture
Gunships and Canoptek Stalkers to name a few things. Mind you some was not just
a single model but at least two. Did I see Grot Tanks or anything that wasn’t
powerful and simply fun or cool? Nope, it was a power grab exploiting what was
made legal for the event. I wonder if some of those lists would have done
performed the same if they stuck with their codex?
Plus, I should add the guy I played with the Canoptek Stalkers
modeled them flat to the ground. Yes, a monstrous creature that has a profile
slightly larger than a ratling sniper. Can we say modeling for cover advantage?
Oh yea, add to a hyper-competitive army and you have a tough list but not very
fun to be on the other side of the table.
I also think it is already rough enough for players to understand
around a dozen codex books and the core rules that have been out for just a
year. Now you want to introduce almost another dozen books to the mix and new
vehicles and such that nobody knows about? Plus, in a timed event you now have
to waste time to ask, “Hey, can I see the book to know what I am up against…”
or you are at the mercy of the other guy telling you or not telling you, then
smiling as he screws your army each turn. Yea, that sounds like fun! Sign me
up! Five minutes or a bit more to read something in a Forge World book may not
sound like much but when you are running out of time that time becomes pretty
damm precious if you ask me. I’d rather be playing more than trying to worry
about some obscure book materials.
I have also asked the Organizer how many of the top 10 lists had
Forge World in them and how many was the top armies in that list in percentage.
I think it will be a shocking total as I know two players I played against went
to the #1 and #2 spots for the last round and had to play one another, both
with Forge World in very hyper competitive lists.
Plus, on a side note Local game stores do not sell the books or
the kits, so why should they support it? They make no profit from it and
allowing money to be spent away from the store is just hurting their profits
not helping. So, let’s allow something to put them out of business? Yea, that
is a good business plan! At a GT, yea you can get away with a bit more.

The Crucible Aftermath!

Well, I had a good time despite the lack of support from my
dice and some over the top lists that I had to face that felt more like playing
against a steamroller than playing Warhammer, but I will discuss that in my
series of Crucible articles that will include:
1) Rankings
and breakdown.
2) Thoughts
on Forge World at events.
3) Hyper
Competitive lists vs. Competitive Lists. Yes, there is a difference.
4) Team
and Single Tournament Game overview with pictures.
The Good:
- Tim and company did a smash up job running Crucible this year as it was the first ever 40 k entries to the event. I want to give a huge thanks to Tim and company for their hard work.
- 9 games in one weekend!
- Won a door prize of Imperial Guardsmen!
- Placed Third in the Team Tournament with our Lion and the Wolf.
- Every game I could not complain about the player as everyone was great to meet.
- I placed mid of the pack in final standings despite 2 major losses and 1 minor loss.
The Bad:
- My dice sucked. Even after changing them on Sunday.
- The gaming area was hot, very hot!
- One of the Elevators gave out, so only one worked the entire weekend.
- My first game on Sunday was 30 minutes late to start. The guy overslept due to time change. I could have been a dick and took the auto win but I played it out to a loss.
The Ugly:
- A couple of hyper-competitive lists that I had to play. Which I will talk about later.
- Forge World, it belongs in friendly games and Apocalypse games, not events.

Time to pick a team!
Well it is time to get serious, I have to pick and purchase my team by next month (Feb) to allow myself about a month and half (allowing 2 weeks for shipping) to paint up and ready by May for a tournament. I want both a team this time with character and fun to paint, winning would be a bonus! So drop me your thoughts...here are mine...
Human, Ork, Norse or Slann Perhaps?
